The importance of communication

Communication is important because you are paying me for a service. I need to make sure that I understand what you want from me and that you feel you are receiving value for your money. This can be accomplished by discussing how you want to communicate, how often, and in which formats (i.e. phone calls, texts, emails, Skype, in person).

It is important that, together, we:

  1. Clarify what you and I are saying to ensure understanding. If necessary, schedule an appointment to communicate updates and reports of what is going on.
  2. Recognize the different types of communication (email, texting, letter, phone, in-person) and understand which one is best to use, and which type you prefer. We also want to be sure to use the right type of communication based on specific situations, and honoring your preference of communication.
  3. Determine the quantity and quality of communication you want to ensure you know that I am doing what is expected for what you are paying.

You are going to have your own preference for communication. I am flexible so as to accommodate you.

What is your Representational System?

You have a representational system, which is the way you “learn” or integrate what is going on in the world around you. I can help you better if I know what your “representational system” is.

The way that I will determine your representational system will be to listen to the way you talk about things.

Do you say, “I hear you,” which is auditory, or do you say, “I see what you mean,” which is visual, or do you say, “I feel you,” which is kinesthetic.

If these types of expressions don’t come up during conversation, then I’ll ask you to describe something, such as a recent vacation and listen for your cueing words.

Here are some different types of questions with examples that I may ask you during a coaching session

A. Open-ended question
1. What products do you want to offer?
2. Who will benefit from your product?
3. How will your product be different from similar products on the market?

B. Probing question
1. What do think you customers like best about your product?
2. What are some other avenues you could use to advertise your product?
3. How are you planning to stay in touch with our customers?

C. Clarifying question
1. How long does it take the consumer to learn your product?
2. What variety of colors are you offering for your product?
3. When do you plan to launch your product?

D. Closed question
1. Have you decided who you want on your board of directors?
2. Do you want a partner in this endeavor?
3. Will you be including a manual with each unit
